2013년 11월 23일, 여성연합 주한외국인지부(IWK)는 11월 커피모닝을 맞아 키아라 사쿠와(Chiara Sakuwa)씨를 초청하여 그의 첫 소설인 ‘여성 해병대원들(The Lady Leathernecks)’이란 책에 대해 이야기하는 시간을 가졌다.

키아라 씨는 2001년부터 2005년까지 4년간 미국 해군에 복무하였으며, 여군에 대한 고정관념을 깨뜨리기 위해 이 책을 집필하게 되었다고 전했다. 이 책은 각자 다른 배경, 목적을 가지고 해군에 입대한 4명의 여성들을 중심으로 이야기가 전개된다.

책에 대한 소개가 끝난 뒤, 그는 참석자들로부터 책과 그의 군인으로서의 삶에 대한 질의응답 시간을 가졌다. 이어 점심식사를 하며 소설 중 기억에 남았던 내용과 우리의 삶 속의 중요한 선택의 순간들에 대해 공유하는 시간을 가졌다.

또한 기증받은 물품으로 크리스마스 바자를 열었으며 그 수익금은 '지구가족사랑1%운동'에 기증할 예정이다. 마지막으로 스네즈하나(Snezhana)씨를 중심으로 신나는 댄스시간을 가지며 일정을 마무리 지었다.

IWK, November Coffee Morning

On November 23 IWK, the International Women in Korea, (Branch Leader: Dr. Elizabeth Colford) invited Mrs. Chiara Sakuwa to their November Coffee Morning, where Mrs. Sakuwa introduced her first novel, 'The Lady Leathernecks', and held a book signing event.

Mrs. Sakuwa joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 2001 and served until 2005. She decided to write this book in order to break down the stereotypes of women in the military.

After her talk, she answered many questions from the audience about her novel and about her own life as a Marine. Through her military service, she feels that she learned to take responsibility for herself and others, to live a healthy lifestyle and gained confidence.

A pre-Christmas Bazaar was also held at the time with many donated items, and the proceeds will be offered to the “1% Love Share Project”.

After a healthy lunch and much discussion among the participants, Snezhana Shapkina led the participants in IWK’s signature “Happy Dance” to close the meeting.
