2013 Unification Camp: ‘Preparing for the Approaching Unification!’ hosted
The 2013 Unification Camp, sponsored by the Unification Education Council, was held for one night and two days from July 30 to 31 under the title, ‘Preparing for the Approaching Unification!’, at the Hanool Youth Center.
The Camp, with a total of 102 participants, including fourth to sixth graders from multicultural families in South Gyeongsang Province as well as college student volunteers, consisted of a field trip to ROKS Cheonan of the ROK Navy’s 2nd Fleet, a lecture given by an invited New Settler speaker (a North Korean defector), a Unification Golden Bell Quiz, a campfire, and group activities.
On the first day, the participants visited the ROK Navy’s 2nd Fleet, where they had a chance to see the ROKS Cheonan, which had been attacked and sunk, and the West Sea Guard, where they heard explanations on the background behind the institution of the NLL (Northern Limit Line), the Second Battle of Yeonpyeong and the bombing of Yeongpyeong-do, through which they could feel firsthand that Korea is indeed a divided nation and ponder the absolute necessity for peace.
In the Unification Golden Bell Quiz session, the participants took part in an ice-breaking game of animal rock, paper, scissors, a Unification OX Quiz, and Unification Volleyball, through which they had a chance to reflect on what they had learned on the field trip. At the campfire, they sang ‘Our Hope’ together, and then divided up into groups to share with one another what they had seen and learned that day. On the second day, they listened to a talk given by New Settler Speaker Song Hee Kim entitled ‘School Life in South Korea and North Korea’, through which they were given a chance to compare the school life of students in South Korea and North Korea, and to think deeply about unification.
Moreover, each group made a poster to promote the unification of Korea, taking the time to think about how they should prepare for the approaching day of unification, which made them learn, think, and realize that unification is not something that we should vaguely wait for, but rather something that we should make and prepare with our own hands.
The Unification Camp, which had only lasted for the short period of one night and two days, was brought to a close with the participants writing down their impressions based on what they had heard from the New Settler speaker, their own feelings and thoughts, and what they felt in their hearts as they prepare to build a unified nation in the future.
