2011년 6월 9일 스위스, 제네바 (Switzerland, Geneva) 유엔 오피스에서 여성연합이 공동으로 주최한 고위급 패널 토의가 개최되었다.

이번 행사는 인권 이사회와 여성연합에 보내진 아프가니스탄의 현장 보고서를 바탕으로 진행되었다. 아프가니스탄에서 실제로 일어나고 있는 끔찍한 상황과 여성, 소녀들의 차별에 대하여 정확히 파악하는 시간이 되었다.

또한 18세 이하의 소녀들이 심각한 결혼생활의 학대로부터 도망쳐 나와 감옥에 수감되어 생활하고 있는 내용 등에 대하여 발표하면서 모든 연사들은 현장에서 일어나고 있는 실제 상황을 설명하며 고발하기 위해 노력했다.

이후 참석자들 모두의 도움과 협력을 유도하며 토의는 마무리 되었다.

Afghanistan Women and Girls Today – Realites and Challenges Geneva, Switzerland, June 9th, 2011

A high level panel discussion co‐sponsored by WFWP was held at the United Nations Office in Geneva on June 9th, 2011. This event developed from a statement that was delivered to the Human Rights Council (HRC) and a letter to the President written by WFWP based upon the UN report from Afghanistan that described the ongoing terrible situation and discrimination of women and girls there.

Incredibly, many young girls under the age of 18 are being held in prison: their crime, running away from forced marriages in which they were badly mistreated.

Each speaker contributed to the picture of the situation presently in the country, with a surprising downplay of fingerpointing and rather the overall conclusion consisting of a series of recommendations that would call upon a heightened commitment and coordination from all partners.
